Choline Bitartrate Explained: How Much Choline Is Really in 300 mg?
MemoryFuel lists 300 mg of choline as dl-choline bitartrate. Depending on how that number is meant, you may be getting 300 mg of choline or about 123 mg.
The 41% rule
Choline bitartrate is choline bonded to tartaric acid. Choline makes up about 41% of the compound's weight, so 300 mg of choline bitartrate supplies roughly 123 mg of choline, while 300 mg of choline would require about 730 mg of the salt. Supplement labels are supposed to declare the nutrient amount and its percent Daily Value, which for choline is 550 mg.[6][5]
The choline line

Reading MemoryFuel's choline line
MemoryFuel's panel reads "Choline (as dl-choline bitartrate) 300 mg" with a double asterisk meaning "Daily Value not established". Since choline does have a Daily Value, a 300 mg choline line would normally show 55%. The asterisk suggests the figure may be the salt weight, which would put actual choline near 123 mg. Only the maker can confirm which reading is correct.
How much choline you need
| Group | Adequate intake | Scoop share if 300 mg choline | If 123 mg choline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Men | 550 mg | 55% | 22% |
| Women | 425 mg | 71% | 29% |
| Pregnancy | 450 mg | 67% | 27% |
Adequate intakes and the 3,500 mg adult upper limit come from the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements.[1] Most Americans fall short of the adequate intake.[2]
Choline and memory
In a large cohort, higher dietary choline was associated with better verbal and visual memory.[3] That is an association, not a trial result. Gut bacteria convert choline into TMAO, and one study linked choline supplementation to higher TMAO and platelet reactivity, a reason people with heart disease may prefer food sources.[4]
Food is the easy fix
One large egg provides about 147 mg of choline. Two eggs a day supply more than the scoop's likely choline content. Liver, fish, chicken, soybeans and cruciferous vegetables add more.
Quick questions on this topic
How much choline is in choline bitartrate?
About 41% by weight, so 300 mg of the salt supplies about 123 mg of choline.
Is choline bitartrate a good form?
It is the cheapest common form and works for general intake. Citicoline and alpha-GPC are pricier forms marketed for the brain.
What foods are high in choline?
Eggs, beef liver, fish, chicken, soybeans and cruciferous vegetables. One large egg has about 147 mg.
